For this discussion, you’ll be examining Feminist Critical Theory in the stories we read for this week, “The Story of an Hour”, “At the ‘Cadian Ball”, and “The Storm”. For this discussion, you will be using some of the questions posed in the Power Point presentation for Feminist Critical Theory, and posted again here. After you read , create a new thread with two full paragraphs of 8-12 sentences:
For the first paragraph, choose one question from the list, and answer it using examples from one of the three stories. You should have 2-3 good examples from the story to answer the question fully. DO NOT answer the question based only on what happens in the story. Go deeper. I want you to make a critical statement about these stories to show a more complex way of thinking. This, of course, will prepare you for your longer writing assignments.
For example, you might choose to answer the question, “Do the women in the work accept or reject traditional gender roles?” about the story “The Storm”. You’d need to choose a character to discuss, then explain how that character accepts or rejects traditional gender roles. First of all, you must think about what ‘traditional’ gender roles are (see the Power Point for some clues). Then you need to think about a specific character to discuss. The question is complex – you might find that one character accepts her gender roles, while another classmate might find that same character rejects her gender roles by using different examples. Be sure you have a complete paragraph, with topic sentence, support sentences, and a closing.
For the second paragraph, choose a different question AND a different story. Again, you should have 2-3 good examples from the story to explain your point of view. Again, be sure your response is complex and complete.
